Councilmember Christina Henderson Issues Statement on Recent Violence in the District

Washington, DC – Today, Councilmember Christina Henderson issued the following statement on the recent violent incidents in the District.

“My deepest thoughts and prayers are with all of the individuals, families, and communities who have been impacted by the recent incidents of violence in the District. A few short months ago, we were lauding the District’s progress on public safety -- reaching a 30-year record low in violent crime in 2024. But what has happened this week underscores why we must not get complacent in our public safety efforts. We must strategically double down in our work with law enforcement and community partners to find and hold accountable those responsible for these senseless acts, and to prevent this violence from even occurring.

"Whether it be a life loss on a street corner outside of a track meet or the tragic shooting outside of the Capital Jewish Museum last night, the common denominator in this violence is the pervasive prevalence of guns on our streets. I know some may say it’s too soon to discuss that, but it must be part of the conversation. Finding out where and how these firearms are being acquired and stopping their proliferation in communities is paramount in ensuring we keep our residents and visitors safe.
